Integrity of the craft is the priority for us, and you'll usually find us hard at work when you come to browse. I went shopping for a fountain and within one hour they had pieced it together, assembled and tested it, and had the fountain loaded into my car. The fountain is solid concrete and the price was phenomenal. They allow you to build your own fountain with the large inventory of basins, pedestal, and decorative elements. Was so excited to shop for a new bird bath at this business. Wandered around looking for a while and although several people looked at me, no one offered to help me or to even say hello. These guys are the best! Super helpful, fast turn around on custom orders. Very reasonable prices. This place is a gem! We are lucky to have them in Portland. We have bought 1 fountain, two matching planters, and a planter that we asked to have a larger hole in the bottom so we could turn it into a fountain. They do a great job of coloring and sealing. When you visit the yard, you'll see what we have currently cast. The galleries here on the site are a more complete display of options because we have many more molds than those which are already cast and on display in the yard. From season to season available stock shrinks and grows and changes, so it’s important to look at our photos so you can show us what you want based on what we can make. Understanding Concrete as a Material

Concrete is not a completely "natural" material, but it's nature adjacent. It's principally made from graded sand and stone, with just a little bit of cement: a mineral based "rock glue" made from limestone, clay, and gypsum stone that has been heated and ground. The cement is mixed in with the rocks, sand, and some water and it sticks them all together and hardens by hydration reactions. That means the mineral reacts with water to form larger mineral crystals that grow and lock together.

There are many cases of similar chemistry in nature that form natural concretes, and the basic process dates back thousands of years to before the ancient Egyptians when neolithic man discovered how limestone can be cooked, crushed, then mixed with water to harden into mortar. Romans did a lot to perfect the process, and over the centuries various pozzolans from clay deposits (silica containing materials) have been incorporated to speed the set and strengthen the concrete.

The most important thing about concrete is that it's an ancient mineral material, highly benign (harmless) to the local environment, and in the modern era it's an exceptional alternative to plastics for garden decor. With plastic-free finishing and sealing options, it's one of the only options today to avoid shedding microplastics in your yard.

Environment

While concrete has gained a bad reputation for contributing to global warming, it's important to understand that this is due to extensive use in building foundations and the structure of tall buildings and roads, not from relatively small garden decorations where it is actually a superior alternative in most cases.

The huge range of emissions for natural stone in the table above is due to the major energy cost being subtractive sculpting. If you make a square block or a slab, the cost is minimal because diamond wire is used to slice. If we're comparing a bench made from a simple slab of natural stone to concrete, the stone and concrete are pretty neck and neck with the small input energy of the diamond wire vs the cement. However, when you have to carefully grind away 30% of the material, then environmental impact explodes for stone statuary.

The only material that almost always beats concrete is wood, which absorbs carbon from the air as it grows and requires relatively little energy to process. Numbers for wood furniture are probably even better than those in the table imply, because they tend to be more airy than concrete. That said, wood has its own drawbacks in terms of labor and additional environmental cost in sanding and refinishing regularly to maintain it, and may have a shorter lifespan than concrete. These are accounted for in the high end value, which also assumes disposal in a landfill which may generate methane thus negating some or all of the benefit of carbon sequestration (it's hard to compost dimensional lumber). wood is the uncontested eco champion when it comes to environments protected from water and direct sunlight, but the exterior world is hostile for wood and requires drastic measures to protect it. Your garden is full of things trying to eat your wood bench -- from insects to fungi -- because it's literally food for them.

Resins (polyurethane and epoxy) which are cast with mineral filler to reduce the amount of resin used end up looking worse in this table than in reality because they can be rotocast. Rotocasting is a technique that spins the mold while the resin is curing to create a thin shell, and they arrive to you 90% hollow. 1.2 to 2.4 kg CO₂e per kg nearly matches wood. That is until you learn they must be filled with concrete or other fillers for strength and durability, so they don't blow away, crack, or deform on a warm day.
Large concrete pieces can also be back-filled with lower emissions materials like rocks and "urbanite" (recycled concrete), so the comparison becomes a complex one of technique. The bottom line is, when compared to most viable alternatives and where it concerns garden decor, concrete is usually the winner in environmental terms and when it's not it's roughly at parity. Concrete elements in your garden, in moderation, are not the bad guy.
